https://ift.tt/ipe2vkD Bury Me Quickly, Quietly, Privately - Onyeka Onwenu Words Recall ~ OsazuwaAkonedo #Lagos #Okoli #Onwenu #Onyeka #Reddington #Stella

Nigerian music activist, Onyeka Onwenu who reportedly died after she slumped at a birthday party in Lagos State on Tuesday night, had in an interview with Primium Times in 2021, explained how she wants to be buried.

Onyeka Onwenu reportedly passed on after her performance at Stella Chinyelu Okoli’s 80th birthday bash shortly after which she slumped and died at the Hospital.

Details of the 2021 interview she had with Primum Times in 2021 is reported excerpt as captured by Punch Newspaper: “In a reflection shared three years ago, veteran Nigerian singer and actress Onyeka Onwenu revealed her wishes for how she would like to be remembered and buried.

“Do it quickly, quietly and privately,” Onwenu wrote in an opinion piece on Premium Times in 2021, emphasising that her burial should be devoid of unnecessary fanfare.

She urged her loved ones to “mourn, yes but not excessively,” and to instead focus on celebrating her life with prayers and light-hearted moments.

“Celebrate me with prayers, lunch or dinner afterwards. Share some jokes about me and laugh.

“Make merriment and then go about your business. If my friends want to celebrate me, they should do so while I am alive, so that I can enjoy it with them, not when I am gone and have no idea about this. That is me Onyeka Onwenu,” she said.

In her statement, Onwenu also touched on broader cultural practices, condemning the lavish display of wealth often seen at Nigerian burials.

She contrasted her own wishes with the extravagant funeral of Obi Cubana’s mother, which sparked widespread debate across the country.

“I am very uncomfortable with the lavish display of wealth on any occasion, especially in a time of hardship and lack for most others,” she remarked, calling for more modest and meaningful ways to honour the deceased.

https://ift.tt/YfUORnX Simon Ekpa Reacts After BDF Kills 4 Policemen In Imo, Takeaway Case Files ~ OsazuwaAkonedo #Biafra #Ekpa #Imo #Owerri #Simon

The Group in a video posted on X social media platform by Simon Ekpa, claimed responsibility for the Monday evening attack on Police check point in Owerri area of Imo State, which led to the killing of four policemen and a point of sales, POS operator.

The group in the video displayed the guns recovered from the policemen which included 3 AK-47 riffles and another gun.

In the video, the group showcased files of cases the police team were handling as at the time of the attack.

The group who spoke in Igbo language as interpreted, said, the attack was the commencement of the four days sit-at-home.

Simon Ekpa identified the group as the Owerri Command of the Biafra Defence Forces, BDF.

In series of tweets during the week, Simon Ekpa stated as reported in quote thus: “The people neutralised in Owerri were terrorists. We call on the Nigeria media to stop addressing terrorists Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Air Force etc as soldiers, police and air force personnel.

The people that kill and maim innocent and unarmed civilians are not to be addressed like officers.

They are none of those names, address them as terrorists they are. Those neutralised in Owerri were terrorists who killed innocent Biafran lady during fierce battle with Biafra forces. They are good in killing unarmed Biafrans. We call on Nigeria to withdraw these terrorists from Biafra territory.

The Biafra Defence Forces Owerri Command has recovered weapons from the terrorists after neutralising them in numbers.

Withdrawal of all the Nigeria terrorists from Biafraland is the demand and we approach declaration in December.
If you think you will continue to use force and terrorism tactics to force us to remain in the union, this will continue to be your faith in Biafraland.

We have absolutely no business with terrorists! If you come to kill us, we will kill you first! We have no mercy for the Nigerian terrorists because we’re on a revenge mission to avenge the death of over 5 million Biafrans killed! When we catch you, we shall have no forgiveness, no sympathy, and no pity!

The Biafra Defense Forces, under the command of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile, have no remorse for the neutralization of terrorists in Biafran territory.

So, you better steer clear!  The terrorists are falling and kissing dust in Biafra, Nigeria must withdraw all its terrorists from Biafraland. We are now resisting your killing.

I am happy that you terrorists Nigerian Army has realised you can’t defeat the people of God and the army of God, the Biafra Liberation Army. You will all go down in Biafra land.

What is the scores today in former Imo state, former Abia state, former Enugu etc? We will continue to roast your terrorists field fighters”, Simon Ekpa said.

It would be recalled that the Biafra Defence Forces on Monday evening killed four police officers on a stop-and-search checkpoint along the Owerri-Onitsha road in Imo state.

An eyewitness who claimed to be a resident of Irete in Owerri West Local Government Area of the state told Punch Metro on the condition of anonymity that fear couldn’t allow him and others to ascertain how many civilians were also shot.

“They also shot dead a female Point Of Sale operator and some pedestrians who were taken unawares and rushed to a nearby hospital. It was horrific. All the people around ran away for fear of being hit by stray bullets.

“This road has become a soft spot for them. Last time, they also shot dead several policemen on duty and civilians.

“Government should beef up security in this area to forestall further occurrences”.

Ismail Haniyeh Killed In Tehran Ahead Presidential Inauguration

https://ift.tt/2zQYMK1 Ismail Haniyeh Killed In Tehran Ahead Presidential Inauguration ~ OsazuwaAkonedo #Benjamin #Gaza #Haniyeh #Iran #Ismail #Israel #Masoud #Netanyahu #Pezeshkian #Qatar #Tehran

Top Hamas political leader who left the Palestinian Gaza Strip since 2019 to exile in Qatar, Ismail Haniyeh has been confirmed killed through airborne projectile at night of Tuesday early morning at a military residential building in Tehran, the capital of Iran ahead of the presidential inauguration he visited the country to attend.

The Hamas’s political chief, Ismail Haniyeh   was killed according to a statement from the group that governs Gaza, which blamed Israel for his death.

Haniyeh was also said to have been killed in his home in Tehran after participating in the inauguration of the new Iranian president, according to Hamas.

“The death of Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas political leader, in Iran will strengthen the deep and unbreakable bond between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the beloved Palestine and the resistance,” an Iranian state spokesperson said.

“The pure blood of Martyr Haniyeh will never be wasted,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said, according to Iranian state media.

Adding that Iranian authorities are currently investigating the assassination as no group has claimed responsiblity for the attack.

However, Kanaani praised Haniyeh for spending his life in the “honorable struggle against the usurping Zionist regime” and for seeking the “the liberation of the oppressed Palestinian nation.”

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards in its statement of confirmation, said, Hamas leader, Ismail Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were “assassinated” in the capital Tehran.

It was gathered that Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed after the building where they were staying was struck, according to the statement issued by the group governing Gaza.

The group said that Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration ceremony of Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday.

“The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas mourns to our great Palestinian people, to the Arab and Islamic nation, and to all the free people of the world: brother, leader, martyr, Mujahid Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the movement, who was killed in a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran,” Hamas said on Wednesday early morning.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also announced Haniyeh’s death.

“Early this morning, the residence of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran was struck, resulting in his and one of his bodyguards’ martyrdom. The cause is under investigation and will be announced soon,” the IRGC said in a statement, adding that the attack was under investigation.

According to media reports, the Hamas leader was killed when an “airborne guided projectile” hit a special residence for military veterans in the north of Tehran, at which he was staying, at about 2am (22:30 GMT on Tuesday, according to Al-Jazeera.

Israel has not issued any statement concerning the attack with Al-Jazeera citing media outlets in Israel reporting that the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had ordered cabinet ministers not to comment.

Far-right Heritage Minister, Amichai Eliyahu, however, made a statement about the Hamas leader’s death on social media platform X.

The killing “makes the world a little better,” he wrote in Hebrew as translated and reported by Al-Jazeera.

It would be recalled that Israel launched a retaliatory war on Gaza, vowing to eliminate Hamas and kill its leaders after the group attacked Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people and taking more than 200 others captive.

Report had indicated that about 39,400 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s war, with 90,996 injured.

“Palestinians across Gaza and the West Bank also view Ismail Haniyeh as a moderate leader who is much more pragmatic compared to other leaders who head the military side of the movement,” Al-Jazeera reported.

Adding, “He is very popular here(Gaza). He grew up in a refugee camp. He represents the vast majority of the people who are the descendants of the refugee families who were displaced from the Palestinian territories in 1948.”

There are concerns by many that Haniyeh’s killing could  lead to a further escalation of the conflict in the Middle east.

Tensions were already high after Israel said it targeted a senior Hezbollah commander in a “precision strike” on Beirut on Tuesday.

“This is a huge escalation – what happened yesterday in Lebanon, what’s happening today in Tehran. It’s an escalation by [Israel] and that’s going to have significant ramifications,” Sami al-Arian, the director of the Center for Islam and Global Affairs at Istanbul Zaim University, told Al-Jazeera.

A suspected protester who was arrested few days ago in Plateau State for allegedly calling on people to attack Petrol stations, Police stations, security operatives and other government infrastructures has called on the general public to ensure that the planned Nationwide protest against Bad Government in Nigeria is peaceful.

The suspect, Suleiman Yakubu who is 34 years old made the appeal on Tuesday when he was paraded before newsmen at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja.

According to the suspect, he allegedly made calls for people to attack properties and security operatives with the intention to have more views or generate more traffics to his social media page on TikTok.

He said he called for the burning down of fuel stations because of the high cost of purchasing the Petrol Motor Spirit, PMS in Nigeria.

Adding that the high cost of purchasing PMS in the country has made the price of bread to scale up to ₦2000.

The Force spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi while speaking during the suspect parade, said: “as you are all aware, a video recently went viral on TikTok, where an individual incited violence against state critical infrastructures, law enforcement agencies, and private individuals in Plateau State, in connection with the planned nationwide protest.

The video, originating from a TikTok account identified as “Dan_Mallam68,” showed the suspect provocatively urging the public to attack petrol stations, security operatives, and destroy critical state and private infrastructures.

Upon receiving this information, the Nigeria Police Force in Plateau State, with support from relevant stakeholders, traced the suspect’s location to Ahmadu Bello Way.

On 28th July 2024, Suleiman Yakubu, a 34-year-old resident of Jos North, was successfully apprehended.

During interrogation, Mr Yakubu confessed to being the individual in the viral video but has not been able to explain his motivation for such statements with severe criminal implications. He is currently in police custody as we continue our investigations.

In light of the planned nationwide protest, we have received credible intelligence indicating that certain individuals are planning to infiltrate the protest and cause chaos.

It is crucial for the leaders and organizers of the protest to interface with the police, providing us with vital information such as contact details for ease of communication, locations, routes, and schedules.

This collaboration will enable us to deploy our personnel effectively, ensuring the safety and security of all participants and the general public.

It is imperative to emphasize that the Nigeria Police will not tolerate any attempts by mischief-makers to destabilize the country or incite violence.

We remain committed to maintaining peace and order and urge everyone to exercise their right to protest responsibly and within the bounds of the law”

Pro, Anti Govt Protests Rock Abuja Ahead August 1st

Group of women on Monday protested against the planned August 1, 2024 Nationwide protest in Abuja just as another group of young Nigerians came out to block Abuja-Kaduna highway demanding end to bad governance in the country.

The Women groups in Abuja staged the protest against the planned nationwide demonstrations over economic hardships.

Many Nigerians have described the women action as an irony of protesting to stop a protest, with some calling it a misuse of resources and questioning the motives behind the rally.

Also, “Say No To Protest” was held in Lagos on Monday to kick against the planned protest.

The “Say No to Protest” Nigerian women in Abuja came out in mass and were spotted dancing as a way of protesting against people planning the August 1, 2024 Nationwide Protest over what many described as alarming rate of hunger and hardship currently in Nigeria.

While the women in Abuja was protesting, in a bold move, anti government protesters blocked the Kaduna Road highway, a critical link between Kaduna and Abuja, just three days ahead the planned 10-day nationwide protest.

The demonstrators, carrying placards with messages like “We Are Not Slaves” and “Hardship Is Unbearable”, chanted anti-government slogans, expressing their frustration with the country’s economic situation.

The protesters demanded an improvement in the cost of living and a reversal of government policies, particularly the reinstatement of petrol subsidies. Nigeria is grappling with its worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation, with food prices more than doubling since President Bola Tinubu removed subsidies and floated the naira.

The government has been trying to prevent the protests, meeting with traditional rulers, clerics, and other groups, while security agencies warn of potential violence. However, the protesters seem determined to make their voices heard, refusing to wait for the planned nationwide strike on Thursday.

Another protest took place in Lagos state on Monday when a group of disgruntled MTN subscribers took their frustration to the company’s FESTAC office in Lagos on Monday, damaging the office fence.

The incident was sparked by the telecom company’s recent blocking of phone numbers due to non-compliance with the NIN-SIM linkage requirement, according to reports.

Many subscribers have been affected by the blockage, leading to widespread discontent and protests at MTN offices across the country.

The protesters expressed their disappointment and frustration at being unable to access their phone services.

Federal Ministry of Women Affairs has called on Nigerians to cancel the planned Nationwide protest, saying, the government led President Bola Tinubu is working towards an improved living standards of people in the country.

In a statement signed and made available by Musa Abdulrahaman, the media aide to the Minister of Women Affairs, the ministry said and in quote: “the Federal Government  has called on Nigerians to shelve the planned nationwide protest as government is working assiduously towards ensuring an improvement in the living standards of the people

Honourable Minister of Women Affairs, Barrister (Mrs) Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye made the call today during a Women Rally organised by the Ministry at the Old Parade Ground, Abuja.

She explained that government was not oblivious of the plight of the people, noting that this informed the  provision of sustainable empowerment machines by the Ministry to 16 States of the Federation, including the FCT, Abuja, with a view to equipping women to earn and contribute to their family upkeep as well as nation at large.

Kennedy-Ohanenye assured that plans are also underway to ensure the distribution of these machines to other States of the Federation in line with their specific  needs so as create more job opportunities and ensure poverty alleviation in the country

The Minister added that the resumption of the Cash Transfer Programme by the present administration with modalities being in place for the reduction of food prices as well as other reforms put in place by the Administration would soon yield the desired results.

*We don’t want this protest, we don’t want our children to die, if there is protest, it shatters the economy*, she said.

The Niger Delta Ijaw leader, Asari Dokubo who graced the occasion called for more patience and support to enable the realization of government’s policies and programmes which are tailored towards economic stability, enhancing security as well as ensuring an improvement in the living standards of the people.

Others who graced the Rally was the President, National Association of Nigerian Student (NANS) Comrade Lucky Emonefe, President of Ijaw Youth Council, Representatives of NLC, RTEAN, NURTW, TUC, e.t.c”

Police Arrests Nigerian Ahead Of August 1st Planned Protest

https://ift.tt/Qdu4BxH Police Arrests Nigerian Ahead Of August 1st Planned Protest ~ OsazuwaAkonedo #Adeyanju #Deji #Igp #Jos #news #Plateau #Suleiman #Yakubu

Men of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested a young man allegedly accused of inciting violence on TikTok ahead of the planned August 1, 2024 mass protest envisaged by Nigerians to press home their demand over high cost of living in the country.

Nigeria Police Force in a news release signed and made available on Sunday by Plateau State Police Command spokesperson, Alfred Alabo, said, the suspect in a viral TikTok video called for people to attack security operatives and burn down government properties including police stations.

The Statement reads in quote: “Following the release of a TikTok video that occupied the social media space, stimulating violence in connection with the planned nationwide protest, the Plateau State Police Command has trailed and arrested the author of the inciting video.

On 27/07/2024, the attention of the Command was drawn to the video putatively emanating from a Tik Tok account, identified as “Dam-Mallam68”.

The suspect in the video was seen assertively inciting the public to attack security operatives and burn down critical State and private infrastructures in Plateau State as part of the activities for the protest.

Based on the strength of the information, the Plateau State Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina, sets tactical assets of the Command on motion to trace and apprehend the source of the mischievous video.

Consequently, on 28/07/2024 around 11:30 AM, one Suleiman Yakubu (male, aged 34 years) of Jos North, Plateau State who appeared in the viral video was picked at Ahmadu Bello Way, Jos through an impeccable informant.

While in our custody, the suspect confessed to being the one in the scatheful video. Meanwhile, investigation is still ongoing.

In view of the above, the Commissioner of Police wishes to state that the Police will intensely resist any attempt by mischief makers to plunge the State in to chaos. He stressed the need for peace to remain untempered in the State amidst the before, during and after the protest.

The Plateau State Commissioner of Police also urges the good people of Plateau State to be law abiding and refrain from making inciting comments that will threaten peace and security in the State.

The CP encourages residents of the State to report any suspicious activities to the following GSM numbers: Police Control Room Emergency Numbers:
07059473022, 08038907662, 08075391844 and 09053872296.

Members of the general public are also advised to report any misconduct of our officers within the State through the following numbers: Plateau State Complaint Response Unit Numbers:
08060545670 (PPRO), 08037681026, 08067884627, 08069638786 and 08066709795″.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force has refuted claims that the IGP is trying to rewrite Nigeria constitution over the planned nationwide protest.

The Force in a statement signed by its Spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi on Sunday, said: “the Nigeria Police Force hereby addresses the recent accusations made by one activist, Deji Adeyanju, and others via various fora, alleging that the IGP is attempting to rewrite the Constitution by requesting the details of the organizers and leaders of the planned nationwide protests.

It is vital to clarify that the IGP has never denied the constitutional right of every citizen to freedom of association and expression, but has rather, at every point, emphasized that the right is that to peaceful assembly and expression.

Also, the Nigeria Police holds the responsibility to ensure that any activity, including protests, does not pose a threat to national security.

In this wise, requesting the details of protest organizers and their leaders and the schedules of their protests which include location, period, routes etc, is a standard procedure to facilitate effective communication, ensure the safety of all participants, and prevent any unlawful activities.

It is also vital for Deji Adeyanju to note that in the interest of defence, public safety, public order, public morality or public health; or for the purpose of protecting the rights and freedom of other persons as enshrined in Section 45 (1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, this request by the IGP is not out of place.

It is essential to know who is planning the assembly (protests) in each state as allowing faceless groups to operate unchecked could jeopardize the peace and stability of the country, and leave us with pains, sorrows and tears as experienced in the 2020 violent EndSARS Protests. If organized labour and other recognized bodies were involved, it would have provided a more structured and safer environment for such public protests.

While the Police urges Mr Adeyanju and other organizers not to mislead Nigerians. We therefore call on them to join hands in working together to uphold the security and well-being of our nation”.

Ugandan police detained dozens of the  protesters at the anti-corruption rally in Kampala on Tuesday, after the protesters defied a demonstration ban.

Security were intensified around Busega Roundabout towards Masaka Road as youths attempted the July 23rd march to Parliament for anti-graft protests.

Police and other security agencies were seen patrolling the streets of Soroti City in anticipation of the planned demonstrations against corruption by some members of the community.

Security were also heightened around Kalerwe as some youths attempt to march to Parliament to protest against corruption.

Opposition leader, Bobi Wine said heavily armed security forces were besieging his party headquarters on Monday and had arrested several leaders, on the eve of a planned anti-corruption march that has been banned by the authorities.

Three Ugandan opposition politicians were detained and remanded in prison on the eve of a banned anti-corruption march, police had said Monday.

“The three members of parliament and seven other people have appeared in court today, charged with various offences and remanded to prison,” Uganda police spokesman Kituuma Rusoke told AFP late Monday, without giving further details on the charges.

He identified the arrested legislators as Francis Zaake, Charles Tebandeke, and Hassan Kirumira — all members of the opposition National Unity Platform — and said they would appear in court on Thursday for their bail hearing.

Ugandan security forces arrested dozens of people attempting to march to parliament to protest high-level government corruption.

Police and military heavily deployed across Kampala, where some protesters were forcibly detained and still in detention as at Wednesday.

The protests, inspired by recent demonstrations in Kenya, aim to pressure Ugandan officials amid growing corruption allegations against Parliament Speaker, Anita Among.

The campaign began after online revelations of irregular expenditures linked to her office earlier in the year, but Among has rejected calls for her resignation. Authorities have deemed the rallies unlawful.

There were shootings in Buddo, Kyengera Town Council, Waiso District.

“We are operating under a military regime, unlike Kenya, where there is support from the judiciary system. Considering our circumstances without the protection and accountability of other government branches. It’s unfair to claim that only a few people represented the cause, particularly when some were arrested. Despite these challenges, the protest was a success” Kirabo Marion, a lawyer said.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni had in a statement days before the protest warned protest organizers that they are “playing with fire,” and he accused them of “working with foreigners to foment chaos.”

Young protesters marched to the parliament in Kampala demonstrating against corruption amid heavy police and military presence.

A police spokesperson said there was increased deployments of security personnel following “reliable intelligence” about alleged plans to “subvert public order” during the protests.

A lot of Security forces were deployed along most routes leading to the Parliament of Uganda with limited access.

https://ift.tt/360C4td US Secret Police Director Kimberly Cheatle Resigns Over Failed Attempt On Donald Trump's Life ~ OsazuwaAkonedo #Cheatle #Donald #Kimberly #Trump #USA

United States of America, USA Secret Service Director, Kimberly Cheatle has resigned following failed attempt to assassinate former US President, Donald Trump who is currently seeking re-election as Republican presidential candidate in the forthcoming general elections in the country.

Kimberly Cheatle who on Monday appeared before a panel of investigation set up by the USA lawmakers over her job functions in relations to the failed assassination attempt on the former President faced alot of condemnations from Lawmakers with some calling for her immediate impeachment.

The US Secret Service Director, Kimberly Cheatle submitted her resignation on Tuesday, according to sources cited by CNN.

Lawmakers from both parties called for her resignation, and some Republican lawmakers initiated impeachment proceedings.

Cheatle’s testimony before the House Oversight Committee on Monday was met with criticism, as she declined to answer several questions posed by the committee.

During her testimony before the House Oversight Committee, US Secret Service Director, Kimberly Cheatle recognised that there were substantial issues with security at the rally, describing them as ‘significant’ and ‘colossal’.

However, she did not acquiesce to calls for her resignation.

“I think I am the best person to lead the Secret Service at this time,” Cheatle said Monday.

However, House Speaker, Mike Johnson described her resignation as ‘overdue’, emphasising the need to move forward.

“We have to rebuild the American people’s faith and trust in the Secret Service as an agency. It has an incredibly important responsibility in protecting presidents, former presidents, and other officials in the executive branch, and we’ve got a lot of work to do,” he said.

Following the shooting, Director Kimberly Cheatle initially indicated that she had no intention of resigning. Cheatle was appointed by President Joe Biden to head the Secret Service in 2022.

A gunman identified by the FBI as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, July 13, attempted to assassinate Donald Trump during his campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The gunman from the rooftop fired some gunshots which injured Trump in one ear before he (the shooter) was shot dead by the Secret Service.

There have been speculations that the Secret Service sniper whom among other colleagues were in another rooftop, cited the gunman early enough but was asked not to shoot.

This speculations widely circulated among the America publics suggested and pointed more accusing fingers to the Director of the Secret Service.

On Monday, shortly after arrived the Congress building, while making entrance, some protesters could be held accusing her of trying to kill Donald Trump.

She looked not disturbed by the accusations from the protesting Americans as she walked into the Congress building after exchanging pleasantries with some of the security operatives around the building.

New Bangladesh Group Protest, Demand PM Hasina Restore Internet After 146 Killed In Anti-Govt Protest

https://ift.tt/bXFhgyo New Bangladesh Group Protest, Demand PM Hasina Restore Internet After 146 Killed In Anti-Govt Protest ~ OsazuwaAkonedo #Bangladesh #Dhaka #Hasina #Sheikh

A new group of protesters gathered at the Prime Minister of Bangladesh office calling on the Minister, Sheikh Hasina to restore internet in the country.

Internet blackout has been experienced in the Asian country since last week when thousands of students blocked major roads in the country most especially at the capital city of Dhaka seeking an end to jobs quota system.

As at on Tuesday local time, it was observed that the country’s army are still on the streets and internet was yet to be restored.

The new group of protesters, Industry Leaders who top business owners demanded that the  Prime Minister, Hasina on Monday to withdraw the curfew and restore internet service, which has been down for days as part of a complete communications blackout.

The group pleaded with her to have the army provide security for the Dhaka-Chattogram highway — the economic lifeline that connects the capital to the country’s main port city — amid fears of vandalism.”

It would be recalled that violence in Bangladesh left estimated 146 dead as students demand reforms to a quota system governing the allocation of government jobs in the country.

Some residents said that the protests intensified following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s remarks, where she allegedly said and labelled the protesters as “Razakars”.

This term, according to observers, it’s historically loaded and carrying a negative connotation, harks back to the East Pakistani volunteer force that opposed the creation of Bangladesh as a sovereign nation during its 1971 War of Independence.

Bangladesh’s Supreme Court amid the protest ruled and abolished the majority of quotas for government jobs.

Previously, one-third of public sector positions were reserved for the relatives of veterans from the 1971 war for independence from Pakistan. The apex court has now reduced this reservation to just 5%.

Law Minister, Anisul Huq announced that the government would comply with the court’s ruling within days. Despite this decision, some student leaders pledged to continue their protests, demanding further reforms.

Amid the protests, the government expanded a crackdown on opposition parties, with at least 70 arrests reportedly made among the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

The jobs quota system, which had earlier been set aside by the government but was revived by a court last month, would have given 30 percent of government jobs to relatives of those that fought in the war that won independence from Pakistan in 1971.

Once scaled back, as ruled by the Supreme Court, 93 percent of public sector jobs will be dedicated to merit-based recruits, with 5 percent earmarked for veterans’ family members. A further 2 percent will be reserved for people from ethnic minorities or with disabilities.

AlJazeera reported that the protesters in Bangladesh have issued demands amid a lull in the violence that has filled the streets in recent days after the government backed down on quotas on hiring for government jobs.

Student leaders said on Monday that they plan to continue demonstrations despite a decision by the Supreme Court the previous day scaling back the controversial job quota system that sparked the protests.

The demonstrators have demanded that the government release protest leaders, lift the military curfew, and reopen the universities, which have been shut since Wednesday last week. They said they would give the government 48 hours to meet the demands.

It was observed that  alot of protesters were attacked by security forces, as well as other students who back the ruling Awami League party, last week as they launched their call against the quota system, which sought to reserve sought-after government jobs for relatives of war veterans and other groups.

Although the court has largely annulled the quotas, the protesters have demanded accountability for the crackdown, including the resignation of ministers.

They have also called for swift formalisation of the ruling. Law Minister, Anisul Huq had said on Sunday that the government would implement the changes to the legislation within days.

The military curfew that was implemented during the protests was relaxed for several hours on Monday to allow people to buy essentials. However, internet connections remained severed for a fifth straight day in the nation of 170 million people, according to the country last population census.

After the renewed call for a nationwide shutdown on Monday by the students’ protesters, soldiers continued to roam the streets and tanks were seen stationed across the streets of the capital Dhaka.

No more fatalities or large-scale gatherings had been reported by the late afternoon as a tentative calm persisted, to according to AlJazeera reporter.

It was estimated that about 32 people were on Thursday killed in a single day during the protest, with the toll expected to rise further after reports of clashes in nearly half of the country’s 64 districts.

Videos posted online saw security operatives shooting directly at the protesters.

Killing of protesters were also observed in August 2018 when group of students protested over safety of roads in the nation’s capital, Dhaka.

A police statement issued after a near-total shutdown of the nation’s internet said protesters had torched, vandalised and carried out “destructive activities” on numerous police and government offices, according to AFP.

Among them was the Dhaka headquarters of state broadcaster; Bangladesh Television, which went offline after hundreds of incensed students stormed the premises and set fire to a building.

“About 100 policemen were injured in the clashes on Thursday,” Faruk Hossain, a spokesman for the capital’s police force, told AFP. “Around 50 police booths were burnt”.

The police statement had said that if the destruction continued, they would “be forced to make maximum use of law”.

Police fire was the cause of at least two-thirds of deaths reported so far, based on descriptions given to AFP by hospital staff.

“At least 26 districts around the country reported clashes on Thursday, broadcaster Independent Television reported.

The network said more than 700 had been wounded through the day including 104 police officers and 30 journalists.

Near-daily marches this month have called for an end to a quota system that reserves more than half of civil service posts for specific groups, including children of veterans from the country’s 1971 liberation war against Pakistan.

Critics say the scheme benefits children of pro-government groups that back Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, 76, who has ruled the country since 2009 and won her fourth consecutive election in January after a vote without genuine opposition.

Hasina’s government is accused by rights groups of misusing state institutions to entrench its hold on power and stamp out dissent, including by the extrajudicial killing of opposition activists.

Her administration this week ordered schools and universities to close indefinitely as police step up efforts to bring the deteriorating law and order situation under control.

Mubashar Hasan, a Bangladesh expert at the University of Oslo in Norway, told AFP Thursday that the protests had grown into a wider expression of discontent with Hasina’s autocratic rule.

“They are protesting against the repressive nature of the state,” he told AFP. “The students are in fact calling her a dictator.”

Students have vowed to continue their campaign despite Hasina giving a national address on the now-offline state broadcaster seeking to calm the situation.

“Our first demand is that the prime minister must apologise to us,” protester Bidisha Rimjhim, 18, told AFP on Thursday.

“Secondly, justice must be ensured for our killed brothers,” she added.

London-based watchdog Netblocks said Friday that a “nation-scale” internet shutdown remained in effect.

“The disruption prevents families from contacting each other and stifles efforts to document human rights violations,” it wrote in a social media post on X”, AFP stated in quote.

And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year.

Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this”, Joe Biden said.

We had earlier reported that the United States of America President, Joe Biden has said that while in isolation for the Covid-19 recovery medical treatment, he will continue to discharge his constitutional duties as the president of USA.

The former President sustained injuries from one of his ears hit by the bullets.

Officials at the White House had stated that Biden is experiencing mild symptoms. They also added that the president is vaccinated and boosted.

“Earlier today following his first event in Las Vegas, President Biden tested positive for COVID-19. He is vaccinated and boosted and he is experiencing mild symptoms.

He will be returning to Delaware where he will self-isolate and will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time.

The White House will provide regular updates on the President’s status as he continues to carry out the full duties of the office while in isolation”.

Murguía told the guests that the president had sent his regrets.

“So of course, we understand that he needs to take the precautions that have been recommended. He did not put anybody at risk.

He said to tell my folks said we’re not going to get rid of them that quickly. We’re going to have a chance to hear from him in the future directly.

He’s just really sorry he couldn’t be with us, and obviously we share that disappointment, but we’ve seen how covid is still happening in our community still, and we understand that protect all of us”, Murguía stated in quote.
